Our people, our dreams… Like his ‘studious’ predecessors Gilberto Freyre and Darcy Ribeiro, Rodrigo Albert has chosen to take a closer look at Brazil’s idiosyncrasies. But instead of setting off down a sociological and anthropological, he produces images that, to a certain extent, show us in our contemporary setting. It’s not entirely coincidental that he won the Pierre Verger Prize in 2006. Pierre Verger, the French photographer and ethnographer, who was Brazilian by adoption, portrayed our culture and our roots. Rodrigo Albert, a 31-year old who comes from Minas Gerais went looking for these same roots by working on our beliefs and traditions. These images contain the essential elements of contemporary photography : a documentary style combined with a strong artistic and esthetic sense. His monograph, ‘Brazilian Cultural Identity’ is divided into three parts : Customs and Work, People and Places, and Myths. Right from the outset, with a title such as this, the undertaking could be perceived as pretentious. But looking through these photographs, sometimes set out as diptychs and triptychs, you realise that each one tells the story of our society as a whole. When faced with the strange colours of these photos – which are more a language than an artificial ornament – our emotion becomes tangible. Text by Simonetta Persichetti
